About

In the first of our education series on Radical Jewish History, we will be discussing and exploring the legacy of jewish nationalism (mostly as expressed in the Zionist movement) and its gendered relationship to both Yiddish and Hebrew.

Traditional jewish society in Europe had long-standing relationships with both Yiddish and Hebrew that was structured by gender divisions. The rise of jewish nationalisms in the late 19th century made unprecedented challenges to this bilingualism as nationalists looked inward and outward in trying to create a nation united by one language. The Zionist movement in particular put forward a vision of Hebrew as an indigenous masculine living tongue that would supplant Yiddish which they saw as a feminine remnant of a decrepit society. These arguments and debates played out through politics, literature, the jewish academy, in homes and on the streets. We will explore the history behind this conflict, how it affected jewish society and Hebrew and Yiddish as living languages until the present day.

This session will be led by Lina Morales, the Boston coordinator of YJVP.
