Henry Cole is Translating “Language into a Beat”
This Friday, we are excited to host this world renowned percussionist who is transforming the music scene: Henry Cole, a Puerto Rican native, leads Villa Locura with his wide musical range, grace, and sheer power behind the drum kit. Cole bridges the traditional with the contemporary, combining various musical influences - Puerto Rican folklore, funk and R&B, jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythms - to create his own, unique genre. We sat down with Cole to talk about the creative process behind this explosive fusion, you can read it here.
This is a performance you won't want to miss. Last chance to purchase your ticketsbefore they're all gone! |

CHARTWELL DUTIRO
http://chartwelldutiro.com/
He has played the Shona mbira virtually his entire life. From his village childhood in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) when he played at ceremonies with a local spirit medium, to his years performing and recording with Zimbabwe’s iconic THOMAS MAPFUMO and the Blacks Unlimited, to his more recent career as a teacher, solo artist, and bandleader in the U.K., Chartwell has cut a remarkable path through African music. Chartwell is a superb instrumentalist and a soulful singer. His arrangements of Shona traditional music are both innovative and inspirational. He is also a gifted storyteller with a deep sense of history and a wry sense of humor. An evening in his presence is an unforgettable experience.
Chartwell specializes in collaborations, and has worked with artists in many genres all over the world. For the past three years, Chartwell has been collaborating with the New York based band TIMBILA. On stage and in the studio, where they are completing a collaborative CD, Chartwell and Timbila create music of mesmerizing beauty, disarming humor and unexpected surprises. Tonights concert features an mbira duo with Nora Balaban, mbira player & singer from Timbila.

MOHAMMED ALIDU
https://playingforchange.com/musicians/alidu/
Alidu's musicality has allowed him to move seamlessly from the villages of West Africa to some of the biggest stages in the world whether performing with the Playing For Change Band, MICHAEL FRANTI, TINARIWEN or BAABA MAAL and his playing isn't confined to one style or genre and neither are his original compositions. As such his performances take the audience on a journey through time and music, weaving West African traditional drumming and dance with his own personal 21st century story to tell the tale of a modern day griot and the Bizung spirit.
ALIDU has toured the world playing on stages at major festivals like Glastonbury and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, iconic venues like the Beacon Theater and recorded with Peter Gabriel. He has also returned every year to his village in Tamale, Ghana to celebrate the traditional festivals that showcase his birthright as a talking drum player in Northern Ghana, a legacy that dates back almost a thousand years to the very first talking drum player, the Bizung, during the time of the Manden Empire. While his musical foundation is steeped in ancient rhythms with an instrument created in the 15th century and learned from his father born in the 19th century, Alidu has guided his talking drum into the contemporary where he currently stands as a powerful bridge between the historic origins of rhythm and syncopation and practically any style of music played today.
