In wake of recent events, I have been pondering many ways
that my generation can finally stand up and make any type of
difference. I'm no activist, but I do know how to throw together a quality yard sale and its exactly that time of year.

What is a better or easier way to get rid of your unwanted belongings than to turn them into an extremely important cause?! Anything from toys to clothes to shoes to books & furniture. I hope to have enough tables for everyone to set up their stuff, but it would be great if anyone could donate or bring their own.

If you would like to donate your items, but aren’t able to participate in the yard sale, I will set designated times for "curb side" pick ups and places for drop offs.

WHERE: First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain. There is handicap parking by the front and street parking around the area!
WHEN: August 27th, 2016.

100% of the profits will directly benefit Boston Black Lives Matter.

The Meeting House Lyceum: The Picnic Aug 13-Oct16

Food on the table brings families and communities together. This event, in partnership with Haley House, deals with food culture as a means to start a willing dialogue of healing. As the participants eat from a menu of traditional African-American dishes, speakers will comment on the history, politics and celebration of food. Participants are invited to bring their own picnic blanket and a favorite recipe to share.

The Meeting House is a platform for inspiring new ideas in relation to the intractable structures of racial discrimination and segregation. Based on houses constructed by the first free Africans in Concord (1770’s) the pavilion structure creates an open, transparent framework that points to the future. The Meeting House will host a series of public programs, entitled Lyceum 2016, inviting visitors to break out of the narratives that keep us from imaging and producing the equitable social relations that we seek.

2nd and 4th Fridays, Doors open at 6:30 pm.  Each House Slam event offers an eclectic open-mic, a polished featured poet, and a competitive poetry slam. The Slam offers a safe space for poets seeking to express themselves. And the poets aren’t just good – they’re national champions! The House Slam team went out to Oakland, CA for the 2015 National Poetry Slam and brought the title back to Roxbury. This article features photos and videos of the championship-winning poets. Thursday evenings at the Café are filled with music, poetry, storytelling, film screenings, open mic time, and more. Jazz By Any Means Necessary (1st Thursday of every month)

We kick off each month with the musical stylings of the Fulani Haynes Jazz Collaborative. The group plays classic jazz standards as well as original compositions, providing a night filled with music, creative intelligence, open minds, and delicious food.

Lifted Boston (2nd Thursday of every month)

Curated by Outside the Box Agency, Lifted Boston was born in 2006 to provide an performance outlet for Boston’s emerging talent. Lifted has hosted over 50 events within the community, and we will continue to strive to keep Boston LIFTED. Lifted has featured musicians, poets, storytellers, film screenings, and more.

Lyricist’s Lounge (4th Thursday of every month)

Our friends at Boston Day and Evening Academy host the monthly Lyricist’s Lounge poetry slam! This all-ages slam gives students a chance to showcase their poetry – poets from all local high schools are invited to join in! Evenings start with an open mic and a featured performer before finishing up with a slam.

Stories Celebrating Life (5th Thursday of the month – March & June 2016)

Storytellers Sumner and Linda McClain share stories about everyday experiences that celebrate life. The McClains also feature both a youth and senior storyteller to explore stories that bridge generational gaps. The audience is also invited to share their short stories. Stories Celebrating Life provides a fun night for all ages.

That’s why we made Community Tables pay-what-you-can, which means that we accept payment for the meal based on what customers can offer–even if that’s nothing at all. All are welcome at our table.

Volunteer

Join us as a volunteer at Community Tables. Volunteers help with event setup, meal preparation, table service, and clean up. The time commitment is from 3:00 pm-8:00 pm on Saturdays. If interested, please check out our volunteer page and then submit an application. 

Donate Food 

We are seeking fresh ingredient donations from local produce growers and farmer’s markets for Community Tables. We are especially in need of locally-grown vegetables and fruits, locally-baked breads, and locally-raised meats and eggs. If you are interested in making a one-time or regular donation, please email communitytables@haleyhouse.org. Haley House is a tax-exempt organization and we can provide a letter for tax deduction purposes upon request.

Lighting the Line and Upham's Bridge Lighting

Join us for Lighting the Line Moving Celebration and Bridge Lighting! Lighting the Line is a collaboration with the Boston Foundation (TBF), DS4SI and many community partners along the Fairmount Indigo Commuter Rail Line.  As part of TBF's centennial celebration, this multi-community public art project celebrates the Foundation’s on-going investment in the culturally rich Boston neighborhoods along the Fairmount Cultural Corridor. The idea for "lighting the line" emerged from creative placemaking work that began three years ago in Upham's Corner.  Residents expressed concerns about the darkness under the rail bridge over Dudley Street, which many felt was a deterrent for community members to go from one side to the other and may also inhibit people in the neighborhood from using the renovated commuter rail stop. DS4SI worked with the Fairmount Line CDC Collaborative to install a "productive fiction"--a temporary lighting under the bridge that received enthusiastic responses from pedestrians, drivers and nearby merchants. A successful idea sparked by residents led to the concept of the Lighting the Lineproject, which just one year later brings together the Fairmount Cultural Corridor communities to celebrate local artists, food, culture, families and neighborhoods. The evening will culminate in the unveiling of John Powell's semi-permanent lighting installation under the Upham's Corner bridge.
