Witness art in action at the unveiling of an urban art piece entitled “GeO (GoFive) Street Art” that honors the creativity and passion of our diverse neighborhood.Created by the GN Crew of Boston, an artistic graffiti group founded in 1995 by local Artists Rezume and Dayz, their contemporary art will decorate La Galería at our Villa Victoria Center for the Arts (VVCA).  Comprised of 13 members, the GN Crew boasts a reputation for local, diverse artists who characterize themselves through their exciting styles, creative color palettes, and innovative ideas for transforming a myriad of spaces.  These talented Graffers (graffiti artists) are helping to redefine what is art while being a voice for our community along the way.

The House Slam

2nd and 4th Fridays, Doors open at 6:30 pm.  Each House Slam event offers an eclectic open-mic, a polished featured poet, and a competitive poetry slam. The Slam offers a safe space for poets seeking to express themselves. And the poets aren’t just good – they’re national champions! The House Slam team went out to Oakland, CA for the 2015 National Poetry Slam and brought the title back to Roxbury. This article features photos and videos of the championship-winning poets. Jazz By Any Means Necessary (1st Thursday of every month)

We kick off each month with the musical stylings of the Fulani Haynes Jazz Collaborative. The group plays classic jazz standards as well as original compositions, providing a night filled with music, creative intelligence, open minds, and delicious food.

Lifted Boston (2nd Thursday of every month)

Curated by Outside the Box Agency, Lifted Boston was born in 2006 to provide an performance outlet for Boston’s emerging talent. Lifted has hosted over 50 events within the community, and we will continue to strive to keep Boston LIFTED. Lifted has featured musicians, poets, storytellers, film screenings, and more.

Lyricist’s Lounge (4th Thursday of every month)

Our friends at Boston Day and Evening Academy host the monthly Lyricist’s Lounge poetry slam! This all-ages slam gives students a chance to showcase their poetry – poets from all local high schools are invited to join in! Evenings start with an open mic and a featured performer before finishing up with a slam.

Stories Celebrating Life (5th Thursday of the month – March & June 2016)

Storytellers Sumner and Linda McClain share stories about everyday experiences that celebrate life. The McClains also feature both a youth and senior storyteller to explore stories that bridge generational gaps. The audience is also invited to share their short stories. Stories Celebrating Life provides a fun night for all ages.

This 3-hour workshop led by Peter DiMuro and members of his performance company, Peter DiMuro/Public Displays of Motion will explore personal stories of members of the LGBTQ community and translate them into movement ranging from gesture to dance. Through stories about coming out, acceptance, chosen family and more, we will look at our radical history as a community and how it relates to the current movement.

No movement or dance experience is required, but it is also welcomed. All can participate to their own level of comfort, even if it is only in engaged listening. The workshop will include the opportunity to move, write, speak and be in dialogue with each other. By workshop’s end, we will have produced mini- performance “docu-dances” about stories shared.

Brassy cabaret performer Claire Kaiser returns to Boston with her newest one woman-show Lip Service, a singing and storytelling performance about a youth worker and performer finding a balance and finding herself. From Connecticut to Boston to Chicago and back, Claire has taken her talents around the country and thrilled audiences with her big personality and powerhouse vocals. After a year of molding young minds as a Massachusetts Promise Fellow, Claire is excited to be returning to the stage!

Opening reception: De aquí y de allá – Ricardo Maldonado Exhibition displayed through July 29th. Friday, July 8th, 6 to 8pm La Galería at Villa Victoria Center for the Arts 85 W. Newton Street, Boston, MA Artist Ricardo Maldonado captures nature in an original interpretation of life and the world’s changing colors around us. Maldonado’s paintings have been displayed in many collective and solo shows in Massachusetts and around the US. In his upcoming exhibition, “De Aquí y de Allá (From Here and There),” the artist takes his own personal experience of being from “there” and displays a life full of contrasts. “For those of us who come from far away, life is always in between.” Food, friends, family, seasons, light, and smells are always seen in contrast to the “other land.” Refreshments will be served.
