Open Awareness and Meditation Group
Open Awareness Sangha is a group of friends who meet for meditation and discussion on Monday nights, 7:30 pm at the Cambridge Friends Meeting House. (The Friends Meeting House is located at 5 Longfellow Park, Cambridge, MA 02138) The format is very relaxed and open— anyone interested in contemplative practice is welcome!
At the heart of these meditation sessions is the silent exploration of what we refer to as Open Awareness. We all know what it means to feel closed, limited, vulnerable, or separate. What is it like to allow ourselves to return to our natural condition of openness, presence, non-separateness and ease? This is what we explore in our meetings.

Movement and Creativity
Movement and Creativity are vital to our lives. When we direct our focus to deepening connections to ourselves, each other and life itself, our experience of life becomes fertile, rich, vibrant.
Movement: classes, workshops, experiments, performances, curiosity, discovery.
Creativity: art, music, process, creation, discussion, experiencing, learning.
The body is the physical aspect of the personality and movement is the personality made visible.- Mary Starks Whitehouse

Tito Puente Music Series July-August

All the concerts start at 7pm. They are completely free and open to everyone. Don’t miss this chance to dance, have fun, and truly take advantage of the season!

SCHEDULE

July 7: Latin Logic Band IMG_0696 copy

O’Day Park, 85 W. Newton St., South End
Rain site: Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, 85 W. Newton St., South End
Combining the sounds of their Costa Rican and Venezuelan origins, this duo plays a special brand of Latin, Jazz, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. Having been near and far, exploring remote corners of the world while spreading their music, their style has retained a unique quality making for a welcomed addition to the typical Latin sounds you hear around the city — and a Grammy Award nomination.

July 14: Mango BlueWT Alex Alvear 1 copy

O’Day Park, 85 W. Newton St., South End
Rain site: Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, 85 W. Newton St., South End
Led by the renowned Alex Alvear, Mango Blue has become an award-winning Afro-Latin music ensemble. Alvear does it all as composer, singer, bassist, and arranger while bringing a little of Ecuador, his country of birth, to Boston. With his unique compositions he has been a driving force in New England’s Latin music scene, making him one of the most accomplished Latino artists in the city.

 July 21: Conjunto ChĂ©vere  ElGrupoChevere

Mozart Park, 10 Mozart St., Jamaica Plain
It all started in 1994, right here in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood. El Conjunto ChĂ©vere has moved away from their original bachata and ballads towards a more lively expression of their roots; and have combined the sounds of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Curacao, and Cuba in an explosive mix of salsa and merengue.

July 28: Clave & BluesClave and Blues copy

Mission Hill Playground, 1545 Tremont St., Roxbury
An authentic Cuban sound mixed with other contemporary influences has earned this local band a significant following across New England. Includes professional musicians from Berklee College and is directed by Cuban Pianist Anibal Cruz who graduated at ISA University of Arts in Havana, Cuba.

August 4: Orquesta Homenaje DSC_0113-2-C[1] copy

O’Day Park, 85 W. Newton St., South End
Puerto Rican percussionist Frankie RodrĂguez has been a mainstay in the New England music scene as the go-to bandleader whenever salsa superstars are performing in the region. His band, Orquesta Homenaje, joins forces with some of the most talented performers and offers an exciting blend of salsa.
Rain site: Villa Victoria Center for the Arts, 85 W. Newton St., South End

August 11: The Remedy

LoPresti Park, 33 Summer St., East Boston
Rain site: Zumix, 260 Summer St., East Boston
This 6 piece  band is taking contemporary pop and reggaeton and transforming it into what they call tropical pop. They blend salsa’s biggest hits with current trends resulting in remarkable numbers that will make you move. Their special bond is apparent in all of their music, as they were friends at Berklee College of Music before deciding to form the band.

FREE FUN FRIDAY SCHEDULE

THE 2016 FREE FUN FRIDAYS LINEUP, VIA HIGHLAND STREET FOUNDATION. / CLICK TO VIEW LARGER OR PRINT A PDF.
To all of Boston’s other free summer series out there, allow me to Kanye you aside for a second (I’m gonna let you finish!) to say that Highland Street Foundation’s Free Fun Fridays is the best summer series of all time.
The foundation has hosted the popular family-friendly series since 2009, growing in size every year. The free programming provides Massachusetts locals and visitors alike with frugal ways to celebrate summer in the Bay State. There are no strings attached—every Friday for ten weeks, eight institutions in Boston and beyond will offer free admission.
Trending: Mindy Kaling Calls Out Hollywood’s Gender Pay Gap at 41st Gracie Awards
“The events are great for children during the summer since they’re not in school,” said executive director Blake Jordan in 2014. “It’s a great opportunity for them to continue their education. We’ve seen a lot of youth groups, senior citizen groups, and veteran groups come out. And we’ve heard from families where a parent lost his job, and Free Fun Fridays was their family vacation. The feedback has been unbelievable—I could count on one hand the number of problems we’ve had as far as people complaining about things like long lines, but generally no one complains because it’s all free.”
Indeed, no complaints here.
