Whiskey Rebellion features a wonderful crowd of whiskey producers and suppliers, along with a few of the people who actually make the whiskey answering questions and explaining the distillation process. There will also be the cocktail demonstrations you've come to love. And snacks! With a ticket, attendees will have the opportunity to sample 12 of the whiskeys, attend the cocktail demos, and enjoy the snacks.

2016 HarvardSkate is pleased to once again offer free outdoor skating. Join us at the Kick-off event on Monday, January 25, 12-1pm!

The rink is located on the Cambridge Street Overpass, just outside the University's Science Center. Skaters can bring their own skates or rent them. If you don't feel like skating, you can simply relax by one of the toasty fire pits or enjoy some delicious treats from the nearby Food Trucks.

Harvard Skate will be open daily from noon to 9pm (weather permitting), seven days a week, through early March. Please check the Common Spaces calendar for updates on free skatin

Book talk and signing with author, Irene L. Gendzier, about her latest book, "Dying to Forget: Oil, Power, Palestine, and the Foundations of U.S. Policy in the Middle East."

Irene L. Gendzier presents incontrovertible evidence that oil politics played a significant role in the founding of Israel, the policy then adopted by the United States toward Palestinians, and subsequent U.S. involvement in the region. Consulting declassified U.S. government sources, as well as papers in the H.S. Truman Library, she uncovers little-known features of U.S. involvement in the region, including significant exchanges in the winter and spring of 1948 between the director of the Oil and Gas Division of the Interior Department and the representative of the Jewish Agency in the United States, months before Israel's independence and recognition by President Truman.

About the Author:
Irene L. Gendzier is professor emerita in the Department of Political Science at Boston University. She is also the author of "Notes from the Minefield: United States Intervention in Lebanon and the Middle East" and "Frantz Fanon: A Critical Study", and she is a coeditor, with Richard Falk and Robert Lifton, of "Crimes of War: Iraq."

In this time of renewed focus on the challenges of racism and violence – and on action for peace and justice – please join us as we remember and celebrate the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The City of Cambridge will honor and remember Dr. King and his legacy as we gather at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church to hear members of the Cambridge community share readings of Dr. King’s words calling for peace, justice and transformation.

We will also feature remarks from Juliette Kayyem, a Cambridge resident and granddaughter of Lebanese immigrants who is rethinking “security” in ways that connect traditional concerns with the need to make our society resilient, just, and equitable. Currently, Juliette serves on the faculty at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. She is an on-air security analyst for CNN and hosts a regular podcast entitled "Security Mom” for WGBH, Boston’s local NPR station. Previously, she was President Obama’s Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security.

In 1967, Martin Luther King described what he saw as the most serious challenge for our society. In his words, "We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered." Almost 50 years later, the United States still faces these three existential challenges to our values as a nation.

In addition to the Peace Commission’s Commemoration and Remembrance at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, once again Many Helping Hands will sponsor volunteer activities for its Day of Service from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at City Hall, St. Peter’s, the YWCA, the Senior Center and other sites. Join Massachusetts Peace Action, Earth Stewardship at First Church Cambridge, and our co-hosts for a screening and discussion of “This Changes Everything,” the new documentary based on the Naomi Klein book of the same name that weaves together threads of climate, racial and economic injustice and the movement of movements already rising for a new, non-extractive economy.

Co-Hosts include Grassroots International, 350 Massachusetts, and Boston Downwinders. A representative from each co-host will facilitate discussions at a thematic table, to take the issues raised by the film into our work and lives.

About the Film:
“This Changes Everything” presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines of climate injustice, from Montana’s Powder River Basin to the Alberta Tar Sands, from the coast of South India to Beijing.

Interwoven with these stories of struggle is Naomi Klein’s narration, connecting the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there. Throughout the film, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.
