Cops, Class, & Race: How to Stop Police Violence Jul21
- Thursday, July 21 at 7 PM - 9 PM
- pinInternational Socialist Organization - Boston358 Washington St, Dorchester Center, Massachusetts 02124
From Baton Rouge to Boston, communities around the nation — and the world — have taken to the streets in protest of the racist police murders of #AltonSterling and #PhilandoCastile and in solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter. Once again our streets ring with the challenge "Who do you protect? Who do you serve?" as the movement raises the question of the police and their role in society.
According to The Counted, at least 574 Americans have been executed by the police in 2016 so far — with Black and Native people brutalized and killed at nearly 3 times the rate of whites.
The police were invented to repress and control oppressed and exploited people — not to keep us safe. From their beginning as a force to quellstrikes, urban riots, and the threat of slave insurrection, the police have always existed primarily as enforcers for the 1% and defenders of their property.
Join the Boston ISO for a discussion about the origins of the police and their relationship to racism, class and capitalism.
----
Free childcare available if reserved before July 19. Please reserve childcare by emailing contact@bostonsocialism.or g or calling 617-902-0476.

SPEAKER: Dr. Khury Petersen-Smith is a Boston-based activist, researcher, and educator. He has been involved in struggles against racism and in solidarity with Palestine, participating in a relief convoy to Gaza in summer 2009. Khury also focuses on US imperialism and participated in a peace delegation to Occupied Iraq in 2004.

Implicit Bias Workshop July13
Are you interested in how implicit bias affects your interpersonal interactions and influences your organization and workplace culture? Come to our workshop on July 13th at MassHousing on 1 Beacon Street in Boston from 9:30am-12:30pm.
Implicit biases are our unconscious associations, buried in our subconscious, that generate feelings and attitudes about other people based on race, ethnicity, age, and other identity traits. We all have biases that we are unaware of, and they significantly impact how we move through the world and interact with others. This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of implicit bias: what it is, how it develops, its impacts in the workplace, and research-based debiasing strategies. You will come away with a better understand of your own unconscious biases, and with practical strategies to reduce them and their impact on your beliefs and actions.

Mental Health Matters May 7
- Saturday, May 7 at 10:30 AM - 4:15 PMNext Week
- pinIslamic Society of Boston Cultural Center (ISBCC)100 Malcolm X Blvd, Roxbury Crossing, Massachusetts 02120
- What would you do if you saw a loved one struggle with grief, depression, anxiety or addiction?
Would you know what to do? What to say? How to help them?
We’ve all heard stories about someone in our community acting “strangely”, or perhaps they just seem “a little off”. Too often, these individuals are followed by whispers of ridicule and suspicion, or outright dismissal. However, if we approached them with empathy, more often than not, we would recognize that they are struggling, perhaps with an illness…one that we cannot see. Our reactions, as individuals and as a community, might serve to further isolate our loved ones and community members and keep them from getting the help they need.
What if this person is you?
Just because we cannot see mental illness physically, does not mean it does not exist. Choosing to “battle it alone”, can make an already difficult struggle, an impossible one.
How long can we turn away from discussing such an important part of our wellness?
So, let’s begin the conversation: one that’s long overdue…because, as a community, for too long we’ve been so concerned about the stigma we have associated with it.
Let’s take the first step towards building a compassionate and inclusive Muslim society.

Black Lives Matter Book Discussion May 14
- Saturday, May 14 at 12 PM
- pinDudley Branch of the Boston Public Library65 Warren St, Roxbury 02119
This is the first in a series of discussions on From #Blacklivesmatter to Black Liberation by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor. We will be discussing the Introduction (Black Awakening in Obama’s America) and Chapter 1 (Culture of Racism).
*if you need a copy of the book, contact contact@bostonsocialism.or g
*The author will be speaking at this year's annual Socialism Conference!https:// www.socialismconference.org /
Over the course of the past two years we’ve witnessed the emergence of Black Lives Matter, a movement that not only demands justice for victims of racist violence of the police, but also acts as a vehicle for redressing the broader systemic racial inequality that characterizes Black life in America. In “#BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation” Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor raises the question, why, in a nation founded on on a vicious and persisting racism, is a period of Black radicalization happening now?
In an effort to answer this question Taylor examines the context in which the mass protests of the Black Lives Matter Movement have erupted and how these protests reveal the illusion of a post-racial America.
In her in-depth look at the political landscape that gave birth to Black Lives Matter, Taylor offers profound insights into questions of why racism persists, how the predominant strategies for fighting inequality have failed, and argues for how the Black Lives Matter Movement has the potential to reignite a broader push for the ultimate goal: Black liberation.
