Mental Health Matters May 7

What would you do if you saw a loved one struggle with grief, depression, anxiety or addiction?

Would you know what to do? What to say? How to help them?

We’ve all heard stories about someone in our community acting “strangely”, or perhaps they just seem “a little off”. Too often, these individuals are followed by whispers of ridicule and suspicion, or outright dismissal. However, if we approached them with empathy, more often than not, we would recognize that they are struggling, perhaps with an illness…one that we cannot see. Our reactions, as individuals and as a community, might serve to further isolate our loved ones and community members and keep them from getting the help they need.

What if this person is you?

Just because we cannot see mental illness physically, does not mean it does not exist. Choosing to “battle it alone”, can make an already difficult struggle, an impossible one.

How long can we turn away from discussing such an important part of our wellness?

So, let’s begin the conversation: one that’s long overdue…because, as a community, for too long we’ve been so concerned about the stigma we have associated with it.

Let’s take the first step towards building a compassionate and inclusive Muslim society.
