Boston+Acumen Salon Oct3

BOSTON+acumen (Acumen's Boston chapter) is hosting a salon dinner at The Melting Pot on Thursday, October 3rd, and we’d love for you to join us.

INFO & REGISTRATION CAN BE FOUND HERE https://bostonacumensalon.eventbrite.com/.

Salons are a time-honored forum for discussion and exchange of ideas. Boston+acumen is continuing this tradition by hosting a series of salons inspired by the values and principles of Acumen (formerly Acumen Fund).

WHO: The dinner will host thirty people coming from all different backgrounds – graphic designers to bankers, non-profit founders to students. It’s about the exchange of new people and new ideas.

WHAT: The purpose of the salon is simply to have a great conversation with inspirational people. Each salon has a different theme and will be based on a set of readings and videos related to that theme.

WHEN: We host our salons a few times each year. The next salon is Thursday, October 3, 2013.

WHERE: We dine at local restaurants that share our values and provide an environment for thought-provoking conversation.

WHY: Acumen is dedicated to inspiring moral leadership. These dinners spur your imagination and challenge you to think about poverty, business and the relationship that exists between them in new ways. HOW: Start by registering at the link above. Once registered you will receive the reading and video content via email along with an overview of what to expect throughout the evening.

Your ticket price covers the cost of your meal and non-alcoholic beverages. Additional items and alcohol are available for purchase during the salon.

*Art of the Schmooze*
Forming and cultivating relationships is at the heart of any successful
fundraising campaign, volunteer drive, committee effort or community
building activity. This training will give you the confidence to pursue
your personal goals - from the importance of shaking hands and making eye
contact, to tips on the best opening line and how to exit a conversation
gracefully. An amazing side benefit is that you'll learn how to create a
welcoming community space by keeping an eye out for outliers, considering
yourself a host instead of a guest and knowing how to compliment someone
without "othering" them.

Practice what you learn! RSVP for SoJust's 7th birthday party, Connecting
for Justice, on Thursday, September 12th at www.sojust.org.

[image: WORD NYC Action 03-09-13]Across the country, abortion rights,
voting rights and workplace protections are under attack. While Black and
Brown youth are targeted and face constant persecution, racist police and
the George Zimmerman's of the world roam free. Right-wing and corporate
forces seek to undo the gains won by the Civil Rights movement, the
movement for women?s rights and every progressive movement that has changed
the history of this country for the better. Women nationwide are taking the
streets to defend the gains of our movements and to push for greater rights
and equality for all.

   - *Full reproductive rights now:* Access to safe, legal abortion and
birth control ? on demand. We want healthcare that covers these services
and access to it for all women. We want the information that we need to
stay healthy, including an end to abstinence-only sex education in our
   schools.

   - *Defend women in the workplace:* Close the wage gap and provide equal
pay for equal work. All jobs must offer maternity leave, access to
childcare and an end to discrimination against working mothers. End sexual
   harassment at work.

   - *Stop the budget cuts:* Cutting federal, state and local social
services punishes poor women. We demand government funding for SNAP, WIC
and other social services that millions of working and poor women depend on.

   - *We want full equality and respect now:* Fight racism, sexism and
anti-LGBT bigotry. Stop the exploitation and commercialization of women in
mass media. An injury to one is an injury to all!

*Shoulder to shoulder, and side by side, join the fight for women's rights
and the rights of all oppressed people. Together, our voices will be heard!*

Facilitating with Purpose and Poise—Even When Things Get Hot (two days)
Anyone who leads meetings can be thrown off balance when difficult moments arise. The difficulty might be an unexpected tense moment among group members, or it may come in the form of a challenge to your legitimacy. In either case, you can learn to prevent an intense “deer in the headlight” moment—and instead act calmly and intentionally. Whether you’re a civic or religious leader, trainer, committee chair, organizer, manager, or facilitator of any kind, you will benefit from 1) a conceptual framework for thinking on your feet and 2) the opportunity apply that framework as you practice "staying grounded." This highly interactive workshop provides both.
The tools and training provided in Facilitating with Purpose and Poise will help you improve your ability to navigate challenges as a leader of constructive conversation.
In this workshop, you will
  • Develop deeper awareness of the personal, social, and cultural attributes you bring to the facilitator role that may help or hinder you in "staying grounded" when working with people whose views, styles, or identities differ from yours
  • Take away core questions you can ask yourself that will help you see through the fog of confusion in difficult moments
  • Gain clarity about resources at your disposal when a clear response or direction is not obvious
  • Build skills through role-play for deciding when and how to address difficulties
  • Learn preventive strategies that can be employed before people are in the room together or in the opening phase of the meeting
Enrollment for this workshop is limited to 20 so that participants may practice skills in intimate groups with case simulation and role-play.

Public Conversations' workshops have limited enrollments. Continuing Education units are available through NBCC and MAMFT. Fem(s)ex is looking for Fall 2013 participants to join its female gender and sexuality workshop!
Who we are: Fem(s)ex is a community-based organization focused on exploring what it means to be female in the 21st century. Through The Fem(s)ex Workshop, we hope to build a space for women to share their stories, to engage in honest and open dialogue about topics that are often tabooed or silenced, and to explore and challenge the experiences, the ideals, and the externalized and internalized structures that have been defining gender and sexual identity for generations.
The Workshop: The Fem(s)ex Workshop is a peer facilitated 16 week workshop that uses peer-to-peer learning, readings, discussions, and self-exploration to engage women in an honest and open dialogue about female identity. We are looking for participants for our Fall season starting Sept 16th and continuing until Jan 24th.
We welcome female-assigned individuals of all races, nationalities, gender identities (including transgender FTM and MTF, genderqueer, pangender, intersex, transsexual, and cisgender women), sexual orientations (including straight, lesbian, gay, queer, bisexual, pansexual, and asexual), sexual experiences, sexual interests, political leanings, religious affiliations, age, income levels, and occupations. At this time, we unfortunately cannot accommodate cis-gendered men.

What is Room to Grow?
Born out of the recognition that every parent raising a child needs support, information and essential items for their growing baby, Room to Grow aims to enrich the lives of babies born into poverty throughout their critical first three years of development. The first fragile three years of a baby’s life require nurturing, responsive care giving and economic stability in order for children to thrive, however families living in poverty face multiple stressors that can be detrimental to a child’s safety and future development. Without these things, babies raised in poverty are more likely to enter Kindergarten behind their middle class peers, leading to a lifelong achievement gap that is nearly impossible to overcome.

Room to Grow was founded in 1998 by social worker and child psychotherapist Julie D. Burns who was working with adolescent patients in some of New York City’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Her intention was to combat the reality that many social, emotional and cognitive challenges that her patients faced had roots from their early experiences in life. Since expanding to Boston in 2005 our unique and innovative program has offered a specialized intervention that addresses a root cause of educational and economic disparity - the parenting skills and resources required for healthy childhood development.
WHY NOW?
Currently close to 400 Boston children and their families receive over 2,000 hours of parenting support at Room to Grow each year however we know that the need is far greater. According to the US Census Bureau, there are more than 30,000 children in Boston living in poverty who are under the age of three. This year increased media attention resulting from policy changes defines early childhood development as beginning at age 4, however we know that a sustainable difference can be made even sooner. Over the next three years, Room to Grow plans to increase client capacity to 700-1,000 families annually. As we grow and develop, we need help your help now more than ever before, which is why we seek to recruit like-minded Bostonians in their mid-late 20s and 30s, working and studying across all fields and industries in the city, who wish to share their time talent and treasures in support of our organization.
Please see the flier attached for more details and feel free to bring a friend(s). To RSVP, for more questions, or directions please give me a call at 617.859.4545 or email me at jerriann@roomtogrow.org.

HEY ORGANIZERS! If you're involved with a group or project and want to spread the word bring flyers for the free lit table. ACTION STATIONS - if you have an action that can be done in 2 minutes (sign a petition) or within 2 weeks of the event (attend rally, stuff mass mailing) bring it so SoJusters can get connected to you and your work. This is not a typical tabling event, there'll be lots of opportunity to schmooze and network! Email robbie@robbiesamuels.com for more information about the Action Stations.

ACCESSIBILITY: 18+, must be 21+ to enter after 7PM. The venue is physically accessible - please note that the elevator is at the rear of the first floor and we've been told that bathrooms are big enough for manual, but not large motor-powered, wheelchairs.
PARKING: Lir is across from the Hynes Convention Center. Parking near Lir is really hard - you could get lucky or you could drive around for 30 or more minutes. There are parking garages by Back Bay station. Best bet is to take the T to Back Bay or Hynes Convention Center (which is the closest T stop).

Yoga/Meditation/Potluck August 23

Yoga * Meditation * Discussion * Potluck * End of Summer * Celebration of Art, Beauty and Community!

Friday August 23rd 5:30-9:30pm
At the Museum of Modern Renaissance
115 College Ave, Somerville, MA (Just outside of Davis Sq.)
$30 per person
Schedule of the evening:
5:30 Arrival, get settled, view the art
6:00 Circle up for Meditation, Journaling, Discussion
    6:30 Yoga practice
8:00 Introducing and blessing our food and eating and drinking together

What to bring:
*Yoga mat and any props you will need
*Something to write in, a journal or piece of paper and pen
*Something to eat or drink to share.  If possible have it be both healthy and beautiful according to your definition (veg and non-veg, alcohol and sweets are welcome)
*A label for your dish with a list of ingredients, for those who might have allergies, or want your recipe
*Your own plate, cup, bowl and utensils (we will have paper available if need be, but let’s minimize our waste by bringing our own if possible, and why not eat off of something beautiful?  Bring your grandmother’s china, or your favorite mug)
*Any business cards or flyers for your business.  This is a community building event as well.  If we know who is doing what in our community, we can support each other more.

What to wear:
Something comfortable to do yoga in And if you like...have it be beautiful, or wild, or festive.  You can of course stay in your yoga clothes for the dinner (I almost never change out of mine), or bring something to change into.  Please do not stress out about what you wear, it doesn’t matter at all, but if you want an excuse to wear those leopard print pants, or to put a flower in your hair, then please do!

This is an absolutely amazing building, you can see some pictures of the space on the website, but nothing compares to being there in person
Please let me know if you plan to come.  You can email me or sign up directly through my website.
