Value, Price, and Profit
by Karl Marx
Tuesday, July 7th 6:00-7:30pm
In the spring of 1865, a debate arose within the International Workingmen's Association over whether attempts by workers to win wage raises from their employers would actually gain them anything, the argument against asserting that capitalists would simply raise prices in response to any wage raises. In response, Karl Marx presented a series of educational talks on the basics of capitalist economy that completely demolished this idea. Long after his death, these lectures were collected into this short pamphlet, the subject of our reading and discussion tonight.
China Discussion Group
Leaning Left: Recent Policy Changes in China
Presentation by Duncan McFarland
Thursday, July 9th 7:00pm
Chinese policy today is “leaning left.” A center-left government headed by President and General Secretary Xi Jinping is in power, a change from the reform group dominant during 1980s-90s period. China is shifting to a new economic model, where growth is driven by domestic spending rather than low-cost exports. A struggle has unfolded between the Communist Party of China and Western anti-China forces and Chinese dissidents.
Red History Lecture Series
Gramsci for Communists
Saturday, July 11th 3:00pm
Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) was brillaint Marxist theorist and dedicated revolutionary, who's work is still discussed today. Unfortunately, a great deal of this discussion distorts Gramsci's ideas in order to advance a reformist agenda or it is confined to academia. Yet Gramsci was a partisan of class struggle and revolution. Communist historian Doug Enaa Greene will lead a discussion on Gramsci's ideas dealing with how to build a communist movement that can win.
Sunday Film and Discussion Night
Shipbreakers
Sunday, July 19th 6:00pm
A documentary co-production of the National Film Board of Canada with Storyline Entertainment directed by Michael Kot, the film explores the practice of ship breaking decommissioned vessels in Alang, India.
An impoverished third world shantytown of 40,000 on the Arabian Sea, Alang also has few environmental or safety restrictions to protect the villagers who dismantle the ships (which have been run aground on the beach) from workplace dangers and toxic substances such as PCBs and asbestos. An average of one worker a day dies from falls and other accidents while others are expected to succumb to future cancers. 2004. (In English, 73 minutes)
