The Opportunity Equation Book Tour Dates Sept

Eric Schwarz, the Founding CEO of Citizen Schools, has written what looks like a really provocative book, The Opportunity Equation, which is part personal narrative, part Citizen Schools founding story, and ultimately a chronicle of educational opportunity in America.  The book describes the growth of what Eric calls a "tsunami of privatized extra learning opportunities" for upper income children -- an under-appreciated trend that has caused a doubling of the learning and achievement gap between upper and lower-income children over the last two generations.  It also details how Citizen Schools and similar programs are narrowing and sometimes even reversing achievement gaps by providing to low-income kids many of the same opportunities that their upper income peers take for granted.

This book has the potential to advance and change the national education conversation, and to lift up Citizen Schools and similar mentoring and hands-on learning programs in a meaningful way.  Pre-publication reviews of the book are very positive.  "Balanced, comprehensive, and incredibly readable," said Amazon.  Publisher's Weekly called the book "a constructive blueprint for boosting achievement without abandoning public education."  And from Kirkus Reviews:  "A call to action for citizens and educators so that the achievement gap can be closed as soon as possible."

The event at the Brookline Teen Center launches a 25-city tour that Eric is doing to promote the book and its message of citizen volunteering and of expanded learning time and to celebrate the work of Citizen Schools while also drawing attention to the growing and unacceptable opportunity gap between wealthier and lower income children.  Eric is donating all author proceeds to Citizen Schools.
