55 events, April 9 Through June 2   More dates
67 Shore Rd, Winchester, MA   (view map)
With live models, theatrical lighting, and painted bodies and props, Amy Arbus (daughter of Diane) vividly re-creates celebrated paintings — melancholy women from Picasso’s Blue Period, a tired Cezanne peasant, a Balthus Lolita, and a handcuffed naked lady by Ingres. Her moody “After Images” are impressions that entertain via their striking fidelity.

music, photography, and desserts Mar2

Tonight Grand Harmonie and Partners In Health are joining together for an elegant evening of music, photography, and desserts.

This unique event will feature a dessert buffet, chamber music performances by members of Grand Harmonie, and photography of health and hope from the 10 countries where Partners In Health works to provide high-quality medical care to those in need.
As we step forward into 2013, we do so in a world still rife with conflict and human need. Organizations such as Partners In Health have made incredible strides in the global health movement but face an uphill battle for support, resources, and recognition. To thrive in the increasingly difficult economic climate, it is vital that non-profits reach out to one another in pursuit of our shared goal - improving and elevating the human experience. As doctors seek to heal the body of the world, so music heals the soul, speaking across countries and cultures. Partners in Harmonie will showcase the work of two fine organizations side-by-side while bringing passionate community members together over dialogue and desserts.

When:
Saturday, March 2nd // 8pm – 10pm ET

Where:
Harvard Epworth United Methodist Church
1555 Massachusetts Ave
Cambridge, MA 02138

Purchase your tickets here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/336094

Home & Away Art Exhibit Feb15

Boston, MA

RSVP TODAY AT http://wita_iran.eventbrite.com/
"Home & Away: Shared Narratives of Gendered Identity is a unique arts and culture series spotlighting the work of four Boston-based female artists from Iran, Pakistan, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia."
The series aims in part to address a lack of exhibits by contemporary Muslim artists in Boston’s galleries and museums, a void that reinforces the perception that Muslim art is limited to calligraphy and rugs. In fact, Boston is home to a vibrant scene of stereotype-shattering artistic innovators from across the Muslim world.
“Home and Away” showcases four diverse examples of this new paradigm of artist: female, of Muslim heritage, and shaped by complex hybrid identities - some with a hidden Jewish heritage, others with seemingly contradictory roots (e.g. Mecca and New Mexico). The shapes, colors, textures, and subject matter provides insight beyond words, offering a window into the past, and a microcosmic view of the issues and experiences that shape so many women today.

The Written Word Exhibit Opening Feb9

The Written Word

  • 6:00pm until 12:00am
  • THE WRITTEN WORD
    BLANC GALLERY
    February 9th-March 2nd
    Opening Reception: February 9th (viewing 6:00-8:00 | afterparty 8:00-12:00)

    ... With works by:

    Meg Hitchcock
    Pat Falco
    Jousef Massif
    Sarah Rushford
    Charley Friedman

“In its communicative function, language is a set of tools with which we attempt to guide another mind to create within itself a mental representation that approximates the one we have.”

Blanc Gallery presents “The Written Word”, featuring text based art from local, out of state, and international artists. Featured artists include: Boston-based Pat Falco and Sara Rushford, international street artist known as Jousef Massif, as well as nationally acclaimed artists Charley Friedman and Meg Hitchcock who have been featured in publications such as The Huffington Post and The New York Times.

“The Written Word” will explore the many ways in which language and text can altar and expand the visual experience. All language is relative. Words have alternative meanings regionally and languages differ across the globe. So how much does language actually affect the way we think and interpret the things we see? To what extent do the words we read and write convey our fundamental meaning?

While the works of Falco and Friedman explore the use of humor and sarcasm reinterpreted into a visual form, Hitchcock takes the written word in a completely different direction by collageing cutouts from biblical and other religious texts in order to foster a deeper understanding of these well-known words and their meanings.

The work of Sarah Rushford examines the writing process through her work. Because her work is rooted in hand written words, she subsequently examines the degradation of the written word via its relationship with the body and the gestural movements necessary to create it. Her simplistic word choices allow her viewers to focus on the emotional connotations we associate with certain words and phrases, as well as the gestural movements she has tied to them visually.

Finally, we will explore translation and the shortcomings of written language through the work of Latin-American street artist known as Jousef Massif. Massif incorporates words in Spanish and sometimes in English as a means of highlighting the inability to fully communicate ones inner thoughts through art or language. Through his work, we might question whether we can ever truly ‘understand’ one another.

“The Written Word” will be on view at Blanc Gallery from February 9th-Mach 2nd. Please join us for our opening reception on Saturday, February 9th (viewing from 6:00-8:00, after party 8:00-12:00). The reception will include live music by DJ Naito.

    CHINO-LATINO: Miguel Trelles
In the exhibit CHINO-LATINO from Puerto Rican artist Miguel Trelles, the colonial history of the Antilles is rewritten through a “creative misreading” of traditional Chinese landscape paintings from the Sung and Ming dynasties. His hybrid compositions fuse the Chinese gestural style with figures and scenery that evoke a distinctly Caribbean landscape. RSVP on Facebook
