Chinese New Year Parade Feb17

The Chinese New Year is celebrated with the annual Chinese Lion Dance Parade in Boston's Chinatown. Home to the third largest Chinese community in the United States, Chinatown Boston is located within the boundaries of Downtown Crossing and the south end of Chinatown runs along the Theatre and Leather Districts.
The Lion Dance itself is a traditional Chinese dance that dates back thousands of years. Two people operate a lion costume and are accompanied by lion dancer troupes and Kung Fu students as they go from door to door in the Chinese community to perform 'cai ching,' literally meaning, 'plucking the greens.' Local businesses leave vegetables and fruit hanging from their doorway to entice the lion. In turn, the lion performs a dance and offers the local business owners good tidings for the New Year.
The annual event is free to attend. Restaurants along the Lion's path provide parade goers with plenty of traditional Chinese New Year dishes like dumplings, noodles, and smoked meat. Chinatown is accessible by the MBTA.
