Update 10/12/12: The Open Studios 10th Anniversary Reception will be held at The Great Hall in Codman Square on Saturday the 20th from 6 - 8:30 p.m. Also at the Great Hall will be a solo show featuring new works by Larry Pierce.
Please be sure to visit 157 Washington Street, where DAC will ahve its future home in the Erick Jean Center for the Arts. We hope to be moved in and running shows and classes by mid-January.
Dorchester Open Studios celebrates its 10th year and we're starting early!
On Friday night, festivities begin at the new Black Box Theater in Codman Square, where opera singer Amanda Villegas will join eleven other singers, songwriters, dancers, and spoken word artists including celebrated Irish Step dancer Kieran Jordan, singer/songwriter Bethel Steele, The Painted Lights' Brendan Little, Joy Daniels and her band, singer and guitarist Brandi Maxam, spoken word artists Stephen Alkins and Christopher Johnson, actress, director and producer Adobuere Ebiama, Gaitskill Cleghorn, Jr., and DJ Tristram Keefe.
On Saturday October 20th, grab a map (the list of places where they can be found will be announced after October 6th) and starting at noon visit the 140 visual artists exhibiting this year at 20 sites! (for the data wonks among us, that's a 41% increase in artists and 138% increase in sites over last year!). We are very excited to welcome the Howard Art Project in Fields Corner and a large group of artists from UMass Boston exhibiting in Uphams Corner. (See a full list of artists and venues here). Saturday also offers readings from 16 poets, novelists, short story writers, non-fiction writers and essayists at a unique venue: the back courtyard at Humphreys Street Studios! Protected from the elements in this cozy outdoor space with hot cider and hot chocolate, take a seat or lean against a sturdy wall and be inspired by the writers among us!
The reception this year will take place on Saturday night, at The Great Hall in Codman Square at 6:00 p.m.
Sunday morning, October 21st, pick from several options - Art + Eats hosted by Go Local MetroBoston at Tavolo Ristorante Ashmont (10:30-11:30AM), a hike along the Neponset River Trail and stop at the kiosks (locations also on the map) where Anne Schmalz' beautiful botanical and nature sketches and watercolors will evoke the flora and fauna of the season, the traditional Art Sermon at First Parish Church. Starting at noon you can see the rest of the venues and artwork you missed on Saturday.
Boston: brought to you through a young, cultural, musical, artistic, political, diverse typa lense.
