The Art of Life After, has the intention of creating space for survivors and supportive communities to celebrate art and creativity that may have arisen from the complexity of a life including experiences of violence. The show will incorporate visual, written, and performance pieces with the goal of inciting a collective conversation about what sexual violence means and does within our lives and communities. Partnered in this goal is the intention of exploring the work of creative healing at the nexus of individual and community growth.
We choose art with an interest in its infinite ability to re-present words, actions, images, and life ways to its audience -- deconstructing its topics while simultaneously allowing a viewer or creator to rebuild their understanding and relationship with what is in front of them. In this show we hope to engage a conversation around healing from sexual violence with our eyes towards it’s multifold intersections with race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, economic and citizenship status.
We as organizers, both being survivors of sexual violence and women of color, hold this event in a deeply personal space. This show is meant for us; artists, survivors, and creators, we who keep on growing and living.
