Svetlana Baskova’s For Marx (2012) deals with a group of foundry workers struggling to set up an independent trade union in post-Soviet, capitalist Russia while their boss tries to wring more profits from them in order to add to his collection of modern art. With echoes of Eisenstein, Brecht, and Godard, For Marx investigates the contemporary validity of the radical political and aesthetic approaches that we have inherited from the past. TWO DAYS IN OCTOBER (2005)
Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book, this program tells the story of two turbulent days in October, 1967. In Vietnam, a US battalion marched into a Viet Cong trap killing sixty one young men. Half a world away, a protest at the University of Wisconsin spiraled out of control. Told almost-entirely by the people who took part in the events, this film offers a window onto a moment that divided a nation and a war that continues to haunt us. 90 minutes.
Red History Lecture Series
Bukharin: The Favorite of the Whole Party
Saturday, July 5th 3-5pm
Communist historian, Doug Enaa Greene will discuss Nikolai Bukharin (1888-1938) who was one of leading theoreticians and political leaders of the Bolshevik Party and the USSR. During the 1920s, he led one of the major Party oppositions which opposed the line of Stalin and defended a continuation of the New Economic Policy. In the 1930s, Bukharin was falsely accused of being a spy, traitor and wrecker, and he was executed after a public show trial. Bukharin has often been overshadowed by other major communist party leaders and remains slandered to this day.

SHOCK DOCTRINE
From acclaimed filmmakers Michael Winterbottom (The Trip, The Killer Inside Me) and Mat Whitecross (The Road to Guantanamo), and based on Naomi Klein's provocative bestselling book of the same name, The Shock Doctrine is a gripping and incisive deconstruction of how radical free market policies have come to dominate the world.
Using shock therapy as a metaphor, the film investigates Klein s central idea of disaster capitalism. When countries are jolted by catastrophic events such as war or natural disasters, they are often subjected to totally un-regulated free market remedies that benefit corporations at public expense. The film traces the doctrine s beginnings from the theories of Milton Friedman and the Chicago School economists, through its implementation over the past 40 years in Pinochet s Chile, Yeltsin's Russia, Thatcher's Britain, and the American Neo-Con directed invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. 78 minutes. 2009.

The Material Basis for Revolutionary Optimism Today
A presentation and discussion led by Wadi'h Halabi
Saturday, July 19th 3-5pm
What is the material basis for revolutionary optimism today? Indeed, is there such a basis?
It can be easy to fall into pessimism in this period -- the just cause of socialism has suffered major setbacks with counter-revolutions in the Soviet Union and eleven other states in the 1980s and early 1990s, and we have not experienced any significant victories for workers' power since Indochina in 1975. Problems are widespread with decomposition of the working class in capitalist countries, and recomposition on unfavorable terms.
False optimism, on the other hand, can lead to errors in action, disappointments and inaction.
The approach of this presentation is to examine the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two major class antagonists, the international working class and the world capitalist class, and their respective organizations. It concludes that there is reason for revolutionary optimism but little room for serious errors, as capitalism in crisis accelerates the destruction of both social and environmental foundations for human existence.
Based on presentations and discussions at the Institute (now Academy) of Marxism in Beijing, the Salt of the Earth Labor College in Tucson, Arizona, and elsewhere.
