Advocacy Lunch+Learn Juvenile Justice Oct24
The Office of Government Relations at Boston Children’s Hospital invites you to
October’s Advocacy Lunch & Learn*
Wednesday, October 24th from 12:30 - 1:30 pm
Topic: Juvenile Justice: Can We Make it More Just for Juveniles?
Speakers: Cathryn Samples, MD, MPH, Boston Children’s Hospital
Lael Chester, Citizen's for Juvenile Justice
Nancy Allen Scannell, Mass Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to ChildrenLocation: Farley 133 Conference Room at Boston Children’s Hospital
In the context of the recent US Supreme Court decision which declared mandatory life sentences for juveniles to be unconstitutional, this presentation will focus on efforts to alleviate various legal roadblocks in our juvenile justice system that negatively impact all youth, but have particular implications for those with mental illness. Specifically: raising the age for being considered an adult in the criminal justice system to 18 and creating a testimonial privilege between parents and children (currently children cannot be compelled to testify against parents, but parents can be compelled to testify against their kids).
* We are converting all Advocacy Lunch & Learn sessions to a brown bag format. We invite you to bring lunch and a friend! Please RSVP to Maria Fernandes, Government Relations Specialist, at maria.fernandes@childrens.harvard.edu or 617-919-3060.
