In 1968 a group of Puerto Rican patriots departed Manuel Rojas’ estate in the Center West town of Lares to take it over and declared Puerto Rico a republic independent of Spain. This was part of a bigger conspiracy led by Ramon Emeterio Betances and Segundo Ruiz Belvis to establish a republic inspired by the ideas of equality and democracy.
